Nautical chart depth lookup (Alaska)

0.005 USDCNo reviews yet

Written by Agorean from what the endpoint says about itself

Gives you what a NOAA nautical chart says about water depth at a position in parts of Alaska.

Give it a latitude and longitude and it returns what a NOAA Electronic Navigational Chart says about the water there: the depth range of the charted area containing the position, the nearest charted sounding and its distance, and the chart's own zone of confidence for that area. Coverage is limited to five working areas of southeast and southcentral Alaska, not the whole state or coast. It is explicitly not for navigation and is not an official NOAA chart product.

WHEN TO USE THIS

When: I need to know the charted water depth at a position in the covered part of Alaska

For example: Send the latitude and longitude and read the depth range and nearest sounding.

When: I need to know how confident the chart is about a depth reading

For example: Read the zone-of-confidence field returned with the depth.

When: I need to check whether my position is even inside the covered area first

For example: Send the coordinates and watch for an outside-coverage refusal instead of a reading.

When: I need charted hazards, not depth, at a position

For example: Use the separate hazards endpoint for rocks, obstructions, and wrecks instead.
