It returns U.S. County Business Patterns data: the number of businesses, employees, and payroll, broken out by industry using NAICS codes and by state. The source does not say how far back its history goes or how current the figures are.
WHEN TO USE THIS
When: I need to know how many businesses operate in an industry in a state
For example: Send the industry and state and read the business count.
When: I need employment figures for a specific industry
For example: Read the employees field for that NAICS code.
When: I need payroll data alongside business counts
For example: Read the payroll field for that industry and state.
