It returns the total US public debt outstanding to the penny, split into debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings. It includes the latest value, the prior business day's value, the day-over-day change, and recent history. It updates each business day and is sourced from the US Treasury.
WHEN TO USE THIS
When: I need today's US national debt figure
For example: Call it and read the latest total.
When: I need to see how the debt changed from the prior business day
For example: Read the day-over-day change field.
When: I need a run of recent history, not just the latest value
For example: Pass a limit parameter to pull back more history, up to 250 days.
When: I need debt held by the public separated from intragovernmental holdings
For example: Read the two separate fields instead of just the total.
