Net present value calculator
Written by Agorean from what the endpoint says about itself
Computes the net present value of a stream of cashflows.
It computes the net present value of a stream of cashflows at a given discount rate. Index 0 is treated as today and is not discounted, and later indices are discounted by (1 plus the rate) to that power. It follows the conventional t=0 treatment most finance textbooks use, which differs from Excel's own NPV function. A positive result means the cashflows create value at that discount rate; a negative one means they destroy it.
WHEN TO USE THIS
When: I need the NPV of a stream of cashflows at a given rate
For example: Send the cashflows and discount rate to get the NPV back.
When: I need a capital-budgeting decision backed by NPV
For example: Check whether the result is positive or negative before deciding.
When: I need NPV using textbook t=0 treatment, not Excel's convention
For example: Rely on this instead of Excel's NPV function, which starts discounting at t=1.
